Runners from across the world had gathered in Switzerland for the 18th Jungfrau Marathon.
The temperature was around 10 °C (50 F) when the runners took off from the start by the Casino in Interlaken (566 m.s.l/1,857 ft.s.l) at 9 am. Cheered by thousands of spectactors and volunteers along the course, runners had 42,195 kilometers (26,2 miles) and 1639 meters (5,377 ft) vertical climb to cover before crossing the finish line at Kleine Scheidegg (2,100 m.s.l/6,890 ft.s.l).
As hours passed with runners fighting the paths making their way up the mountain, temperature raised to over 25 °C (77 F). For spectators following the race, a railroad network served as transportation in the scenic mountains. A total of 4,036 runners from 39 nations finished.
