2010 München Marathon

Most tourists traveling to Bavaria in October are heading to Munich to take part of the annual Oktoberfest. Over 5 million visitors attend consuming over 5 million liter beer. The weekend after some 7,500 visited Munich for the 25th anniversary of München Marathon drinking about 60,000 liters of water.

I was in Munich for the 2008 race but had just caught a cold and could not participate. No cold this year so conditions were better. Running in Switzerland a month earlier I would soon find out my body had not recovered and soon my goal changed from finish within 3 hours 30 minutes to just cross the finish line.

From the start at Ackermannstraße, the route takes the runners through the beautiful Englischer Garten, then back to Altstadt before they finish at the Olympiastadion. The profile is flat, the course predominantly on asphalt but includes several narrow curves slowing the runners pace down.

The event also includes a marathon relay, a half marathon, a 10 km race and a folklore run.

Winter has arrived to Sweden with hours of daylight decreasing. Time for the annual winter break.

I’ll head to the sunshine state to enjoy some heat and great company. Tickets are booked with Continental Airlines for December 16th 2010. Flying from Stockholm to Fort Walton Beach estimated travel time is 20 hours with stop overs in Newark and Houston.

Arriving at Fort Walton Beach airport, Panama City is located about 58 miles east along the Gulf coast an hour away by car.

Inbound flight to Sweden is scheduled for January 9th 2011.

2010 Jungfrau Marathon

Runners from across the world had gathered in Switzerland for the 18th Jungfrau Marathon.

The temperature was around 10 °C (50 F) when the runners took off from the start by the Casino in Interlaken (566 m.s.l/1,857 ft.s.l) at 9 am. Cheered by thousands of spectactors and volunteers along the course, runners had 42,195 kilometers (26,2 miles) and 1639 meters (5,377 ft) vertical climb to cover before crossing the finish line at Kleine Scheidegg (2,100 m.s.l/6,890 ft.s.l).

As hours passed with runners fighting the paths making their way up the mountain, temperature raised to over 25 °C (77 F). For spectators following the race, a railroad network served as transportation in the scenic mountains. A total of 4,036 runners from 39 nations finished.
